As CHF’s Executive Director for more than ten years, Tony Breuer has overall responsibility for the shape and direction of the organization. Under his leadership, CHF has grown to become a solid and well respected international development organization known for its effectiveness in designing and delivering large projects in complex environments abroad. During that time, CHF emerged as a significant actor in policy analysis and dialogue concerned with rural development. It has also become a leader in public engagement and development education inside Canada.
Prior to joining CHF, Mr. Breuer was employed with the Canadian International Development Agency and served in Canada and abroad for more than twenty years as a diplomat and foreign aid official. He has worked and lived with his family in Tanzania, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ethiopia, and has participated in the delivery of Canadian foreign aid from both the donor and civil society perspectives. At CIDA headquarters, he held a number of executive positions relating to both policy development and bilateral programming. He also served in Canada’s Privy Council Office as a key advisor to the Prime Minister of the day on international development and on North/South issues. Parenthetically, Mr. Breuer served for three years with the Aga Khan Foundation overseeing large components of its programming in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. He studied economics at the University of Guelph.
