Environmental Sustainability

Working the land is the primary resource for the majority of rural poor to attain a secure and productive livelihood. The degradation of natural environments can impoverish communities and compromise the ability of future generations to obtain sustainable food security from their ecosystems.

CHF reflects the importance of protecting the environment by maintaining a strong focus on its own capacity and the capacity of its partners to address the cross-cutting theme of environmental sustainability in its development programs. Throughout the process of each project, CHF works with local partners and beneficiaries to assess potential environmental risks and impacts to ensure that a community’s environment remains unaffected.

CHF also ensures that all projects are implemented in ways that follow the environmental policies and regulations of the respective donors and recipient governments with whom they work.

Project Examples — India

The Canada-India Rural Energy Project promoted fuel efficiency and appropriate renewable energy technologies as a compliment to biogas technology. Among other things, the project designed and disseminated information on alternative technologies, designed and developed self-financing operations and maintenance schemes, and provided technical and financial management and capacity development support.
