Our Sectors
Agriculture and Rural Development
Agriculture is the backbone of economic activities in rural areas and is the main source of income and livelihood for most of the rural poor in developing countries.
CHF's expertise in agriculture and rural development is broad and varied. Our interventions include:
- Increasing productivity through more efficient techniques such as organic soil fertility management, small-scale irrigation schemes and integrated pest management
- Identifying new crops and supporting local farmers to diversify crops
- Improving crop varieties and livestock production
- Creating market linkages and pro-poor value chains
- Facilitating access to agricultural extension services
- Strengthening agriculture-based enterprises and cooperatives
Examples of CHF Agriculture and Rural Development projects:
CHF is currently implementing the Sustainable Poverty Reduction in Northern Ghana project. Working towards our objective to sustainably improve the resilience and livelihood of poor female- and male-headed households in selected communities, CHF focuses its intervention on improving agricultural productivity, increasing farm and off-farm incomes, creating an enabling environment for risk mitigation and the reduction of vulnerabilities, and strengthening the capacity of local partner organizations.
In the Community Livelihoods Enhancement through Agricultural Land Reclamation project in Vietnam, CHF and Mines Advisory Group (MAG) established a partnership to bridge the traditional divide between land clearance and long-term sustainable livelihoods development. CHF's component of the project promoted the production of suitable crops and livestock fodder crops on cleared land, and helped communities increase their productive assets.
