Profile

Profile

With almost 50 years of experience, CHF is one of Canada’s oldest international development organizations. A well-established organization with proven management and technical capacity, CHF has implemented close to 1,000 projects in more than 40 developing countries.

CHF works with poor rural communities in Africa, the Americas and Asia. Our interventions concentrate on enhancing the productive capacity of these communities and supporting them to become the drivers of their own development. We aim to deliver effective, sustainable and transformational development solutions to rural poverty issues.

CHF undertakes projects and technical assistance assignments funded by multilateral and bilateral donors, such as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Our work encompasses the full project cycle, and ranges from short-term assignments to complex, multi-year programs and projects.

CHF’s Approach

CHF’s programming aims to achieve sustainable results and resilient communities. We partner with local organizations and support them in designing, implementing and monitoring projects in collaboration with their community and government partners.

CHF’s development practice is grounded in two core approaches:

Sustainable Livelihoods Approach – CHF’s sustainable livelihoods approach (SLA) uses a comprehensive, integrated and assets-based approach to rural development that brings sustainable transformation to the rural poor. SLA begins by analyzing rural poverty in a way that respects and empowers households and communities as architects of their own development. It then uses that analysis, and aspirations defined by households themselves, to develop livelihood strategies that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

Capacity Building – We believe that building local capacity is integral to ensuring sustainable development. Thus, CHF implements most of its projects in partnership with local organizations, simultaneously building the capacity of these organizations to grow and thrive. Working through a main partner, we are also able to build capacity within the broader network of community-based organizations and local government, and among individual households and community members.
