An Innovative Path: Local Solutions to Global Environmental Changes

Presentation Overview:
With a global environment that is changing, many of the world's poor are the worst affected. This highly interactive workshop explores the topics of deforestation, desertification and climate change and how each one affects rural communities and their struggle for survival. Students will learn how CHF is helping farmers implement innovative and creative strategies to adapt to the increasing stresses they face as a result of a change environment.

The workshop starts off with an introduction ot the topic of global poverty by playing the "If the World Were a Village" game. Students will also play the UN Millennium Development Goal activity where students, work together in small groups to rank the goals and look at targets and quick facts for each goal. Through this activity, students will better understand the interconnectedness and complexity of development issues.

Following this, students will talk about "What's Right with This Picture?" and learn about the world players in development, including CHF as a non-profit organization. A formal presentation about Global Environmental Change with opportunities for discussion with the Global Educator and your class will occur.

If your class is more than an hour, the Game of Survivor or the Gender Mapping game will be played to get at the heart of the social, economic, political and environmental factors that impact the rural communities and how the sustainable livelihoods approach ensures people reach their aspirations.

At the end of the presentation, students will learn about ways they can get involved through our Gifts That Matter campaign, the Reality Race event and our Show What You Know Media Literacy contest.
