Past Projects: Kenya

Pastoralists Development Project

Where:

Kenya, Samburu and Marsabit Districts

Who:

CHF and FARM AFRICA

Funded by:

Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

Purpose:

To help pastoralists increase milk production of their camels in conditions of frequent drought. Pastoralists are people who depend on livestock for survival, moving from one area to another, following the availability of seasonal water and grazing land. This is a wide-spread way of life throughout sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in dry, harsh environments.

Results:

CHF worked together with pastoralists to develop new and improved methods for taking better care of their camel herds. Camel milk is rich in nutrients the main source of food for nomadic people living in the desert-like conditions of Northern Kenya. CHF helped pastoralist people increase camel milk production by:

  • Learning new techniques to better manage their herds
  • Providing basic veterinary care for the camels
  • Establishing small businesses
  • Improving the pasture and water supplies for camels
  • How to manage conflict over grazing areas and water
