Past Projects: India
Action For Food Production (Afpro)
Where:
India
Who:
CHF and AFPRO
Funded by:
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
Purpose:
To create and promote family sized biogas plants and to provide training on their use on a national scale.
Results:
- CHF helped over 90,000 households in rural India to build family sized biogas plants. Villager women's lives are greatly improved. They can now grow gardens and spend more time taking care of their children. The children no longer gather wood and manure for fires, so they can go to school. These biogas plants helped villagers to have:
- clean and convenient cooking and lamp fuel
- better household air quality
- free environmentally-friendly organic fertilizer
- better harvests and more crops to sell at markets
- less time spent on fuel gathering and food preparation
Canada-India Rural Energy Project (Cirep)
Where:
India
Who:
CHF and India Renewable Energy Network (IRENet)
Funded by:
CHF and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
Purpose:
Increased the use of new and renewable energy sources, and strengthened the ability of a network (IRENet) to market and transfer viable energy technologies in rural areas of 15 states in India.
Successes:
- The NGO Network
- A network of 55 NGOs interested in renewable energy, IRENet, was set up and is now functional. It has the capacity to reach villages in 15 states of India through the use of website, newsletters, brochures and a database.
- Training
- Member NGO's have been fully trained in EmPower Appraisal & Analysis Tools to increase the use of new and renewable energy sources in their communities.
- Implementation
- Development of 25 case studies and 68 business proposals. Implementation of 5 Pilot Projects. One of the pilot projects was allocated a grant by the Canadian High Commission under the Canada Fund, and the same project was runner-up for the Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy, UK
- Change in Attitude
- Discernible change in attitude towards non-subsidy based promotion of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs). This is apparent from the willingness of the network to take risks, plan programs based on full cost recovery and show readiness towards receiving loan fun
