What can 50 cents a day do?

You might be surprised at how much just 50 cents a day can help communities of grannies taking care of a generation of orphaned children.

50 cents per day = $15 per month = $180 per year. With CIDA’s commitment to match the funds 3:1, that’s a total gift of $720 annually!

CHF is committed to creating sustainable livelihoods for these communities and helping vulnerable granny-headed families with supplies such as:

  • Home Based Care Kits procured and supplied to volunteers who are taught about how to care for HIV/AIDS patients. Each kit consists of a printed bag, 10 gauze and 1 crepe bandages, 1 bottle Vaseline, a pair of scissors, 1 packet bicarbonate of soda, 250g cotton wool, 1 packet Milk of Magnesium trisilicate and 10 linen savers.
    • Just 50 cents a day would purchase 10 kits each year.
  • Seeds and Fertilizer to grow cowpeas, sweet potatoes, sunflowers, herbs and a variety of fruits and vegetables to produce nutritious food crops and condiments most efficiently.
    • Just 50 cents a day would purchase 400 kg of sweet potato seeds each month.
  • Food Processing Equipment such as solar dryers and pulping machines for a whole community to produce products for market:
    • Just 50 cents a day for one year is enough to purchase a solar dryer. It would also contribute to the purchase of a $3,000 pulping machine or a $6,000 peanut butter processor.
  • Household Food Packs consisting of beans, cooking oil, salt, kapenta and peanut butter.
    • Just 50 cents a day would buy enough food packs for 7 households for a year.
  • Beehive Materials and Training for the most vulnerable households to make beehives and then manage in order to generate income over the long term.
    • Just 50 cents a day would help to purchase the materials necessary and provide the training to build and maintain 160 beehives.
  • Goats, which immediately produce rich milk for consumption and manure for vegetable gardens, as well as meat to sell later on. Goats are relatively easy to raise and there is a ready market for goat meat and milk nearby.
    • Just 50 cents a day would buy enough goats for 3 families to start their own herd.
  • Chickens, which quickly and easily produce eggs to eat and sell, also offer a protein-rich addition to meals. As the chickens reproduce, the chicks are distributed to other vulnerable families or sold for income.
    • Just 50 cents a day would buy enough chickens for 10 households to start their own flocks and market their eggs.

Note:  The figures above include the CIDA match and have been annualized except where a specific timeframe is stated.
