| Literacy and
School Enrollment
Literacy has also improved significantly throughout the life of the project. Illiteracy rates have declined by
20.9 percentage points for males and
by 15.5 percentage points for females. School enrollment has also risen dramatically.
For the age group of 7 to 18 years of age, school enrollment has increased from 52% to 79% overall, with similar trends experienced by girls and boys.
Access to school facilities has also improved. All PFS-II kebeles have at least a first cycle school (grades 1-4). Due to the construction of satellite schools, the average distance to schools has decreased from 6.1 km to 4.3 km, reducing the one-way walking time
for children by half an hour. School construction and road improvements,
as well as new bridges and water crossings,
have made schools closer and easier for children to get to.
Students wishing to continue their education in preparatory school must travel to Bati town which is approximately 12.3 km away from the 10 intervention communities. The road work carried out by PFS-II has made travel to and from Bati town easier, slightly reducing the average distance. Those living close enough to the town walk back and forth each day, while those who live too far away have to stay in Bati town, making their schooling more expensive for
their families.
