Livestock, Poultry
and Beekeeping
Improving livestock assets, management techniques and production constitutes a key element of achieving food security and improving household incomes and overall nutrition.
PFS-II has worked to enhance livestock production by providing improved supply and quality of feeds, genetic quality of local animals, better management of veterinary services, as well as market mechanisms. The project has also facilitated increased access to livestock for women by prioritizing the provision of those animals and activities most accessible to women.
PFS-II livestock interventions have included the provision of small ruminants
and cattle for breeding and fattening, the establishment and distribution
of forage multiplication centers and seeds respectively, as well as the provision of veterinary equipment and the stablishment of veterinary posts and vaccination crushes.
In addition, community livestock health workers, farmers and development agents participated in training sessions on dairy development, poultry production, livestock restocking management and forage development.
PFS-II promoted apiculture through the distribution of bee colonies, beehives and related equipment which were accompanied by training sessions
and demonstrations on beekeeping management.
