Income-Generating Activities (IGAs)

The provision of alternative, non-agricultural income generating activities is important not solely for increasing household incomes but also for reducing the risks and vulnerabilities to food insecurity confronted by households and for fostering economic diversification. Furthermore, supporting non-farm sectors provides opportunities for the poorest, and often female-headed, households to be absorbed into efficient productive activities.

Project activities included the provision of training sessions in tailoring, carpentry, metalwork, pottery and embroidery. Women’s savings and credit groups were organized, provided with working capital and trained in petty trading. Grain mills for cooperatives and women’s associations, a Community Skill Training Center, as well as a poultry production center for people living with HIV/AIDS were also established. Experience-sharing tours and diverse training sessions for households, development agents, community-based organizations and government officials were conducted.
