| PFS: A Joint Response
to Drought and Famine
In early 2003, parts of Ethiopia experienced a hard-hitting drought, which resulted in the widespread loss of crops and livestock.
The Government of Ethiopia issued an appeal for international assistance to address the underlying causes of chronic food insecurity. CHF and ORDA responded with the Partnership for Food Security (PFS) Project in March 2003.
The project was supported by a $1 million dollar contribution from the Sprott Foundation, matched by major additional funding from CIDA. It was the media attention from the 2003 drought that caused the family of Canadian businessman, Eric Sprott, to offer $1 million to CHF to respond to the emergency situation.
CIDA immediately agreed to provide a further $2 million and to consider supporting a longer term project aimed at shifting 61,000 individuals from chronic dependency on humanitarian assistance
to sustainable livelihoods. |
