Power of Decision- Making

The Power of Decisions

Through this presentation, students will explore the decisions they make in their own lives and learn about how poverty affects the ability of the rural poor in Bangladesh to make decisions that will improve their lives. They will also learn about how CHF is helping communities to create opportunities and to work towards gender equality.

The format for each of the above presentations will be as follows:

Beginning:

The workshop starts off with an introduction to the topic of global poverty by playing the “If the World Were a Village” game. Students will also play the UN Millennium Development Goal activity where students work together in small groups to rank the goals and look at targets and quick facts for each goal. Through this activity, students will better understand the interconnectedness and complexity of development issues.

Middle:

Following this, students will talk about “What’s Right with This Picture?” and learn about the world players in development, including CHF as a non-profit organization. The formal presentation on your chosen topic will follow, with opportunities for discussion with the Global Educator and your class. If your class is more than an hour long, the Game of Survivor or the Gender Mapping game will be played to get at the heart of the social, economic, political and environmental factors that impact rural communities and how the sustainable livelihoods approach ensures people reach their aspirations.

End:

At the end of the presentation, students will learn about ways they can get involved through our Gifts That Matter campaign, the Reality Race Event and our Show What You Know Media Arts contest.

Suggested Times:

For Grades 10-12: If we are speaking to a large group approximately 50-70 minutes is best. For individual classroom presentations, 50-90 minutes will allow more time for questions and answers.

CHF's presentations also help you to meet your curriculum objectives. See how by viewing the following curriculum documents: Grades 7-10 or Grades 11-12.

The real game of survivor

Beyond disaster relief

“Something that my classmates and I agreed was interesting was that CHF doesn’t just throw money or supplies at people in need, you also teach them how to become self-sufficient and not only that, but you give them a sense of pride and worth. Every single person on this planet, rich or poor, deserves that….Thank you for reminding all of us of that.”
