Sustainable Livelihoods for the Ultra Poor in Bangladesh

Purpose:

To increase ‘real incomes’ by 30% in the villages of three upazilas in Chandpur District by building assets, diversifying activities and strengthening coping mechanisms.

Situation:

Chandpur District suffers from a high incidence of extreme poverty. With few industries in the area, the population have little opportunity to earn income, and most lack land title and ownership. Agricultural production is mainly limited to rice mono-cropping. The population is especially vulnerable to labour migration, exploitation of natural resources and money-lenders. Isolated from government services, the population here have limited access to health care and education.

Objectives:

The goal of the project is to permanently reduce poverty among the poorest segments of three upazilas in Chandpur district. Its purpose is to assist, support and enable poor, rural households in the project areas to attain sustainable livelihoods and thereby to reduce their economic and social vulnerability.
